My Dad, me and my sister on the back
This is a blog about "Personal Dictionaries"--Mine in particular. We may be familiar with Webster's definitions of words, but our life experiences, interpretations, and exposure to words, helps us write our own!
My Dad, me and my sister on the back
I also have to add a disclaimer, the technical part of blogging is my enemy! Computers hate me! So please bear with me, while I work through the glitches. If I wait til they are all worked out, I won't end up writing anything at all. Right?
Here is the word of the day:
Word: Calorie
I thought this was fitting because one of the top resolutions people make at the beginning of a new year is to diet, to lose weight.
Webster's Definition: a unit for measuring heat: especially: one for measuring the value of foods for producing heat and energy in the human body equivalent to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water one degree Celsius.
My Definition: I understand the scientific definition, but is that really what comes to mind when you hear the word? This is what I think of. Numeric values given to foods that you enjoy eating, to make you feel guilty. The higher the number, the more guilty you feel and usually the better it tastes! My rule: If you are going to eat it, forget about the number so you can enjoy it, if you can't forget about the number, don't eat it. Of course you shouldn't do this all the time, but forget about those numbers and enjoy hat wonderful dessert! Portion control sometimes is much better than denial!!!
Happy Wording!!

What is a "Personal Dictionary?"
Well there is the literal/concise definition of a word that can be found in Webster's Dictionary, and then there is the "Redefined" meaning, that is based on individual experiences, interpretations, and exposures to a word. These definitions can vary a little or a lot, from Webster's.
This concept of "Redefining Webster's" came to me about 17 years ago while going through an extremely difficult time in my life. I started noticing new words being added to my everyday vocabulary. It wasn't that I hadn't heard these words before, it was that I had not experienced them! When you experience a word, it takes on a real life definition.
For example, take the word Divorce...Webster's defines it as 1): an act or instance of legally dissolving a marriage. 2): separation or severance.
Short and to the point, no emotion attached. To someone who has not personally experienced divorce, this definition would probably suffice; but to someone who has actually "gone through" a divorce, their definition will be much more dramatic and emotional, and have their personal story attached. This will be the case whether it was a negative or positive experience.
Another way Webster's can be "Redefined", is through pure interpretation. We can all hear the same word and definition, but can interpret it very differently! This can be cause for some major communication failures.
Webster's can also be "Redefined" through exposure. As we go through life, we may be introduced to the same word several times, and in several different ways. In this instance, we may not change our definition, but merely keep adding to it.
I have learned, that with every new experience-- whether good, bad, or just different, comes a new definition, and each one helps write a "Personal Dictionary" and define who we are.
So, here I go on my journey of "Redefining Webster's" through my own interpretations, experiences and exposures...one word at a time!
